Speaking of (well, sort of) shooters vs. strategy, there's a beta out for a game that pits RTS vs. FPS. It's in an "open" closed beta stage right now and it might be something worth checking out.

It's called Battleswarm: Field of Honor (www.battleswarm.net) and you can sign up at FilePlanet, if you're interested. Link: http://www.fileplanet.com/promotions/battleswarm/

Being someone who has always enjoyed games that encourage and give benefits to Private Communities (Read:Guilds/Legions/Clans) that succeed, The larger scale battles are always something I enjoy. However I really enjoy small scale objective based combat, Capture the Flag being one of my favourites.

The main problems I see are when characters are given so many options or not enough options that they are made to excel at a certain thing. Damage reduction and crowd control I find are the most affected skill sets, crowd control becomes a bit obsolete in large scale battles and large amounts of damage reduction becomes less useful in small scale. Guess thats down to those skills sets being the focal point of strategy and technique.

Do you design an area where lots of smaller battles make up the bigger picture? Not sure thats what you are looking for, thats sort of just choping a problem up to smaller bits.

Looking forward to your continued discussion.
