I think that especially with MMO style games the extra content is made so that people don't quit when there's nothing left to do. That's especially important for games that are mainly PvE.

A great example of a non-MMO game that doesn't constantly release extra content and has a fee is Laser Squad Nemesis, a turn-based 2 player strategy game. The fee allows you to play online against other players.

Laser Squad has had 2 major content releases. The first was a 4th race to play as, the second was a single player campaign that either comes with your first subscription or is a one-time purchase. I subscribed for several years because the game was strategically interesting and being able to play against people online was worth it.

Even though lots of people were excited about the 4th race it was never a popular option while I was playing. With Laser Squad people are paying for the player matching service and the ability to play online.

Yet even then, I'd wonder - if you get more enjoyment out of a game with no contented added after the beginning than a game with more (but less enjoyable) content added after initial release... could you honestly say that the latter could justify a subscription fee but the former couldn't, even though you'd be paying the same for both?

Subscription fees are more based around the fact if the game evolves (not patched because it was released with errors) and has more content added along it's longlasting path. If the game is divided into lobbys, continents, planets or starsystems or needs to feature elves doesn't matter.

Lots of "offline" games also feature extra DLC content after some time so recurring fees are explored to the full possibilities by game companies. A subscription fee should secure that it's all consistent and that the game continues to provide new options and challenges. If GA follows the path they can win the dispute with evidence.

Like you say in your ending statement. Personally I have never had problems paying subscription fee's because to me online gaming is a hobby.
I know for a fact that some peoples hobbies are a lot more expensive.

Even when playing the conventional fps'; If I enjoy what I am playing, I will end up paying some type of recurring fee. But when I do that I gain access to extra features: Ability to administrate my own server, my own maps, ability to say who goes on it who doesn't.

Will talk about Global Agenda because you brought it up in your article. The idea of does it "justify a subscription fee". I am on the fence on this discussion, as when I look at it fully you do not really get much added for paying it (The PvP mode Breach is AvA without the bells and whistles). In the end I can see why people bring up the discussion.

But I am definitely in the group that has no problem paying subscription fee's, but only if it adds something.

A well written article as always.
